A Closer Look at Aotearoa Kendo Club

Renowned for its commitment to the precise and disciplined practice of kendo, Aotearoa Kendo Club stands as a cornerstone of martial arts training in Christchurch. Established in October 2000 by dedicated instructor Dong-Ho Choo, who holds a 5th dan ranking, the club quickly expanded with the arrival of chief instructor Jong-Jae Park (6th dan) and assistant instructor Hyun-Jin Park (6th dan) the following year. This growth marked a pivotal moment, leading to its affiliation with the Korean Kumdo Association as an overseas branch in August 2002. The club's name, 白雲館 (translated as Aotearoa, meaning white cloud), reflects its deep cultural ties and serene ethos. In March 2023, it further solidified its presence by affiliating with the New Zealand Kendo Federation, ensuring standards aligned with national martial arts practices.

Today, the club thrives with more than 10 active members engaging in regular kendo training. Sessions emphasise the traditional elements of this Japanese fencing art, including footwork, strikes, and mental discipline, all under the guidance of highly ranked instructors. Whether honing techniques with bamboo swords or building endurance, members experience the transformative power of kendo, fostering not just physical prowess but also focus and respect. As a sports club dedicated to kendo, Aotearoa Kendo Club provides a structured environment where participants of varying experience levels can progress together, drawing on its rich history to inspire every practice.
